Returning To Work While Receiving Disability Benefits

One of the most common — and understandably intimidating — questions among Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients is: can I return to work without losing everything I’ve worked for?

The short answer: yes, with the right information and support. SSA has built-in work incentive programs designed specifically to help beneficiaries explore employment without immediate risk to their benefits.

Key Work Incentives to Know

  • Trial Work Period (TWP): SSDI recipients can test their ability to work for up to 9 months without affecting benefits
  • Extended Period of Eligibility (EPE): A 36-month safety net following the TWP where benefits can be reinstated if earnings fall below Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA)
  • Ticket to Work Program: A free SSA program connecting beneficiaries with Employment Networks (ENs) that provide vocational services, job placement, and career counseling
  • Plan to Achieve Self-Support (PASS): Allows SSI recipients to set aside income or resources to pursue a work goal
  • Impairment-Related Work Expenses (IRWEs): Allowable deductions for disability-related work costs when calculating SGA

The Role of an Employment Network

An Employment Network (EN) is an organization that has partnered with SSA to provide free vocational and employment services to Ticket holders. Working with an EN means having a team in your corner — helping you identify job goals, navigate work incentives, and build a sustainable path back to employment.

Majid Rehabilitation Consulting LLC is in the process of launching as an approved Employment Network, with a commitment to serving beneficiaries who are ready to take the next step with confidence and informed support.
